Bundaberg ginger and traditional botanicals are a winning combination for Queensland’s Kalki Moon Distilling and Brewing Company, which has won gold for its unique gin at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards.

Australia’s only national spirits competition, the awards recognise distilling excellence across 11 categories.

This year’s awards were presented in Melbourne on 4 April, where Kalki Moon took the top prize for its Navy Gin.

Kalki Moon’s medal tally is growing quickly.

Last year, Kalki Moon’s London Dry Gin won gold at both the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition, London. They also won 2 silver medals and a bronze for other gin varieties and a chocolate liqueur at the international competition.

Master Distiller and Founder Rick Prosser said he was proud to win the Australian award.

‘Sales are going very well, with our products sold through most Queensland independent bottle shops and nationally in 90 stores,’ Rick said.

‘Our navy-strength gin is the ultimate in a classic gin and tonic or soda – one of the smoothest navy-strength gins to ever be released.’

Navy Gin is described as big and bold, full of juniper, heavy on the angelica and liquorice root, with a touch of Bundaberg ginger for spice.

The distillery recently expanded its premises and currently employs 6 people in the family business.

The Australian Distilled Spirits Awards highlight innovation and excellence in the industry, and give producers an essential benchmarking forum and platform to promote their spirits and liqueurs to industry and consumers.

Kalki Moon has worked closely over a number of years with TIQ’s Wide Bay–Burnett staff, including joining more than 20 other Queensland companies for TIQ’s Food and Hotel Asia mission to Singapore in 2018.

Supporting Queensland exporters is a priority of the Queensland Trade and Investment Strategy 2017–2022.
