Queensland is a focus for the Australian defence effort, with more than 23,000 military personnel and 14 significant army, air force and naval facilities based here. More than 30 of Australia’s top defence suppliers are also based in Queensland.

Queensland’s location within the Asia-Pacific region and defence capability mean that it will continue to be a strategic priority for the Australian Defence Force. It offers many opportunities to invest in defence research, development and manufacturing.

Part of the global defence supply chain

Queensland has a strong defence industrial base, and world-class capabilities in defence maintenance and repair, education and training (including simulation), logistics, and autonomous airborne vehicles.

Queensland contractors have long been trusted suppliers to the Australian Defence Force, and are increasingly moving into overseas markets. One initiative providing access to the global supply chain is the decision by German defence manufacturer Rheinmetall to establish its Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence in South East Queensland – its largest presence outside of Germany.

Research and innovation

Queensland is also on the cutting edge of defence research and innovation. Based in Brisbane, the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centre for Trusted Autonomous Systems brings together academic and industry researchers to develop smart-machine technologies for the Australian army, navy and air force.

Queensland Government support

The Queensland Government has established Defence Jobs Queensland to consolidate a smart, connected and efficient defence sector.

As part of Defence Jobs Queensland, the Queensland Defence Industries 10-Year Roadmap and Action Plan (PDF, 5.7MB) supports growth in Queensland’s defence sector and its contribution to national and global markets.
