David Goulding, or ‘Granddad Jack’, was born in 1919 in a small town on the South Island of New Zealand called Timaru.

He packed an incredible amount into his rich 93 years – farmer, harness racing driver, barber and passionate family man, but each day he would find time for a moment of quiet reflection over a neat whiskey.

It is a tradition that inspired an idea, with four of David’s grandsons sustaining his legacy through an increasingly successful business currently exporting from Queensland.

Granddad Jack's Craft Distillery is a family-owned and operated producer of award-winning spirits and liqueurs, with an award-winning craft distillery on the Gold Coast, a bar experience in Newcastle and international expansion and export success in ten countries to date.

Exporting to Europe made easier

So just exactly how does a craft distillery from Miami on the Gold Coast wind up exporting from Queensland, with their premium spirits enjoying particular export success in exporting to Europe.

It takes a vision, a commitment to your craft, a desire to innovate, a mountain of hard work and the right partners.

Partners just like Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ), whose complimentary export advisory services have played a central role in Granddad Jack’s export success.

“There is absolutely no way we would be, as a company from Queensland now in countries around the world, so quickly without that support of Trade and Investment Queensland,” says David Ridden, CEO and Co-Founder of Granddad Jacks, and one of the aforementioned grandsons.

“We decided really from the very beginning of the business that we wanted to export, it’s a major part of our business model and we needed to get that expertise from people who have got that experience in exporting.”

Leveraging export grant assistance and market insights

Granddad Jack’s also benefitted from the export grant assistance and subsequent market insights provided through TIQ’s Go Global Export Program.

“Trade and Investment Queensland have been phenomenal in this area,” David added.

“They add way more to our business than just funding, like the free services that you get, and they were always on hand when we needed help expanding our export market in Europe.”

“It’s really important that you get the right partners and now that we have this base around the world of TIQ staff members we can link and find out who those owners of the major distributors in each market are and really understand those companies before we approach them.”
